A Primary Aim of the Army Cadet Program

Cadet Fitness Assessment

The purpose of the CFA is to have cadets measure their personal fitness to help them set individual goals for improvement. Cadets are assessed using criterion-referenced standards as to whether they are in the healthy fitness zone (HFZ) based on five evaluations.

These evaluations are designed to evaluate cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, and flexibility.  These tests include:
  • 20m Shuttle Run  (cardiovascular)
  • Push-Ups  (muscular strength)
  • Curl-Ups  (core strength)
  • Back-Saver Sit and Reach  (flexibility)
  • Shoulder Stretch  (flexibility)

Achieving the Standard
Cadet Fitness Assessment (CFA)

The overall incentive level is based on the level achieved in each section.

(1)  The lowest incentive level of the push-ups, sit-ups, back saver sit and reach, and the shoulder stretch is dropped.

(2)  The overall incentive level is based on the lowest of the remaining four.

(3)
The cadet must achieve the minimum of BRONZE in the Shuttle Run (20m) in order to be awarded an overall incentive level, because cardiovascular
endurance is considered the most important component of fitness.
  • (3.1) For instance, Cadet receives BRONZE in the 20-m Shuttle Run Test, EXCELLENCE in Curl-Ups, EXCELLENCE in push-ups, NIL in the Shoulder Stretch, and BRONZE in the Back-Saver Sit and Reach. The NIL result is disregarded and the cadet receives a BRONZE incentive level.
  • (3.2) If however, Cadet receives NIL in the 20-m Shuttle Run Test, SILVER in Curl-Ups, SILVER in Push-Ups, EXCELLENCE in the Shoulder Stretch, and EXCELLENCE in the Back-Saver Sit and Reach. One of the SILVER results is disregarded and the cadet receives NO incentive level (the overall incentive level cannot be higher than the incentive level achieved for the 20-m Shuttle Run Test).
